Data Specialties Inc.'s unparalleled team of designers, project managers, electricians and technicians is led by some of the most knowledgeable and experienced experts in the data center and structured cabling industries. Our management team includes:
Phil Rafferty, President and Co-Founder, has more than 30 years of experience in the data center and cabling industries. Prior to co-founding DSI in 1990, he was the General Manager for a Los Angeles data center electrical contractor. In addition to running the company, Phil leads DSI's key projects from design through completion. He also leads the company's efforts to expand its geographic presence.
Ric Maxson, Vice President and Co-Founder, has worked in the data center and cabling industries for more than 30 years. He was a Major Accounts Manager with a Los Angeles data center electrical contractor, before partnering with Phil to establish DSI in 1990. Ric leads our company's operations and has been instrumental in nearly every major project the firm has completed. Ric is a well known and respected expert in Data Center Construction, with an emphasis on the electrical systems.
Steve Borley, Vice President of Sales, began working in the data center and cabling industries in 1983. His experience includes the opening of five new start-up operations in two countries and has extensive experience working in both Europe and the USA. Steve recently joined DSI to head up sales and marketing efforts. As such, he works closely with current and potential clients to ensure that our expertise best supports their immediate and long-term objectives.
Brent Ciulei, Sales and Project Manager, is one of DSI's key PM and oversees our new and expansion data center projects from design through close-out documentation. Brent oversees quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), tracks budgets and schedules in real time, and manages construction document preparation, job site inspections, local permitting and technical reviews to ensure that projects are completed on budget and on time. Prior to DSI his experience included tenures with Orange County, CA, data center fire suppression and electrical consulting firm and a Los Angeles data center electrical Contractor.
Steven M. Clark, Sales and Infrastructure Project Manager, began working in the cabling (voice/data/fiber/CATV) and networking industries in 1983. Prior to joining DSI in 2004, Steven served as project manager for Kaiser Permanente's National Health Connect System and also as president of a Southern California cabling design/install firm. He manages our infrastructure cabling projects from sales through commissioning and maintenance. Among key projects he has overseen for DSI were those for Stater Brothers and Santa Ana Unified School District. A licensed electrical contractor, Steven is certified by numerous networking/telecom, security, fire alarm and paging systems manufacturers authorized programs.
Jim Dunn, Sales and Cabling Project Manager, has more than 20 years of experience in cabling design and installation. Prior to joining DSI in 2004, he served as project manager for a Fortune 1000 company. At DSI, Jim oversees the design and installation of category 5e/6 cabling systems and fiber optics networks, installed within new and updated data centers and data storage facilities. Among key projects he has completed for DSI are those for the California State Automobile Association, El Pollo Loco, Behr Processing Corporation and St. Jude Medical.
Mike Gilkerson, Architect, Project Management/Business Development, has more than 21 years of industry experience; brings to DSI experience in developing ground-up and expanded data center facilities, server rooms and network operations centers for a wide variety of clients. As a LEED credentialed professional, Michael works to incorporate energy and environmental efficiencies into all project programs and scopes. Prior to joining DSI team, he worked with Data Specialties Inc. on several server room projects for Navy Marine Corp Intranet located throughout the Western US. The past few years, he has focused on the IT expansion and growth of facilities for DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures.
Brian Oshel, Business Development Manager – Northern California, has more than 24 years of industry experience. Brian has worked for manufacturer's reps, a manufacturer and owned general contracting firm specializing in data center construction. Brian's focus is on providing comprehensive, reliable, energy efficient solutions to each customer's unique requirements. He is a licensed Class B general contractor in California.
Scott Koons, Construction Project Manager, has more than 15 years of construction management experience and has been managing data center projects since 2001. Prior to joining DSI in 2005, he served as a project manager for a San Diego-based data center electrical contractor. At DSI, Scott oversees new and expansion data center projects from design through closeout documentation. Among key projects he has managed have been DreamWorks Animation SKG, Navy Marine Corp Internet, National University, ICU Medical, Las Vegas Review Journal and Swedish Health Services.
Vern Koops, Primary Construction Project Manager, on electrical systems and low-voltage cabling projects. Vern as over 25 years experience in the industry. He provides project management and general supervision of electricians and installers on tasks of all sized and levels of complexity. Vern joined DSI in 1990, in 1996 opened our Northern California office and is currently our on-site project manager for projects outside of California.
Jim Pocock, Manager, Northern California Office, is the lead Project Manager on our projects in the region. He manages the design and build – as well as expansions, consolidations, changes and ads – of data centers and high technology facilities of all sizes from sales to facility commissioning. He is a licensed and general contractor in CA; Jim is also our Northern California safety officer. Under his direction, the company recently earned it's "oil refinery" level safety rating.
Chris Bibeau, Regional Manager – Arizona Office, has more than 27 years in the Construction Industry; Prior to joining DSI, Chris worked as a Construction Manager for Sempra Energy, Senior Project Manager for a Design Build Data Center Contractor and Field Electrician. He is a current licensed holder of Electrical C-10 and General B-1 State of California contractor. Chris takes pride in understanding the clients' needs and desires for all aspects of any project being discussed.
Jeff McCartney, Business Development Manager, is responsible for all Southwest Region, Jeff works with current and potential clients, manufacturers, engineers and is responsible for developing strategic business relationships. Jeff has over 20 years of industry experience and services include Project Management, Design-Build capabilities, Network integration, Infrastructure and Telecommunication IP/VPN solutions and overall support options for all deliverables.
Nelson G. Luhrsen, Senior Project Manager – Northern California, manages commercial construction projects, including the organization and management of sub contractors, crew, material, safety and ob schedules. With 12 years experience in both electrical field and data center build-outs, Nelson brings extensive knowledge and providing project management and consulting services in all aspects of design and installation. Nelson as continually been recognized by both management and peers for his ability to perform tasks with precision, timeliness and attention to detail.
